Dear Harding Families,
Thank you for your support of teachers these past two weeks. My “classroom” visits and our Friday collaboration time last Friday show that teachers are not only starting to settle into this digital mode of teaching and learning, but starting to map out iterative plans for capacity building for themselves and their students. We are working together to grow at a pace that avoids overwhelm and shut down…for all.
This situation is stressful for all of us. Dropping the classroom into your homes is disruptive and confusing for children and adults. This article from The Cut by teacher and parent Anna Silman describes some of the struggles and hopefully helps parents think about, and find, some way to manage distance learning that works in your home.
This week in “classrooms”, community and relationship building continues with the addition of more formal assessments. You should notice that learning plans are shifting into more academics. Academic assessments give teachers the information they need to plan instruction that meets the students where they are. PLEASE, do not help your child with assessments. We need to know what they know and can do so that we know what we need to teach them. Assessments are never used for grading.
Also this week, special education team meeting scheduling is getting back on track, the learning center schedule was drafted for intervention to begin soon, and a materials distribution system was created and will start Friday, September 4. Teachers will notify families when there are learning materials ready for pick up from the MPR (right next to the Ashbury Avenue gate) on a Friday between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm. Remember, student learning plans are being built as we get to know the children better so schedules will continue to have adjustments for another week or so.
I hope you attend the PTA meeting this Tuesday evening. My report will focus on assessment and curriculum. Take care and stay safe.

Estimadas Familias de Harding,
Gracias por apoyar a los maestros estas últimas dos semanas. Mis visitas a los salones virtuales y nuestro tiempo de colaboración el viernes pasado muestran que los maestros no solo están comenzando a adaptarse a este modo digital de enseñanza y aprendizaje, sino que están comenzando a trazar planes iterativos para el desarrollo de capacidades para ellos y sus estudiantes. Trabajamos juntos para crecer a un ritmo que evita agobiar y no querer participar.
Esta situación es estresante para todos. Tener el salón de clases en sus hogares es perturbador y confuso para niños y adultos. Este artículo de The Cut por la maestra y madre Anna Silman describe algunas de las luchas y, con suerte, ayuda a los padres a pensar y encontrar alguna forma de administrar el aprendizaje a distancia para que funcione en su hogar.
Esta semana en los “salones virtuales”, la construcción de relaciones y comunidad continúa con la adición de evaluaciones más formales. Deben notar que los planes de aprendizaje se están trasladando a ser más académicos. Las evaluaciones académicas brindan a los maestros la información que necesitan para planificar la instrucción de cada estudiante sea donde se encuentren. POR FAVOR, no ayude a su hijo con las evaluaciones. Necesitamos saber lo que entienden y pueden hacer para saber qué necesitamos enseñarles. Las evaluaciones nunca se utilizan para dar calificaciones.
También esta semana, la programación de la reunión del equipo de educación especial se está volviendo a encarrilar, el programa del centro de aprendizaje se redactó para que la intervención comience pronto y se creó un sistema de distribución de materiales que comenzará el viernes 4 de septiembre. Los maestros notificarán a las familias cuando los materiales de aprendizaje están listos para recoger de la sala multifuncional (que se encuentra justo al lado de la puerta de Ashbury Avenue) los viernes entre las 9:00 am y las 3:00 pm. Recuerden, los planes de aprendizaje de los estudiantes se están construyendo a medida que conocemos mejor a los niños, por lo tanto los horarios se seguirán ajustando por lo menos por una semana más.
Espero que puedan asistir a la reunión del PTA este martes por la noche. Mi informe se centrará en la evaluación y el plan de estudios. Cuídense y manténganse sanos.
