Message from Interim Principal Yamashiro
Harding families, I’d like to leave you with reflections on a strength here at Harding School that I will describe as patient persistence. It is often the case at schools that when they describe their approach as patient, what is meant is that expectations and accountability are low. When they describe an approach as persistent, it often means demanding and overbearing. Here at Harding the staff has worked hard to find the balance, particularly around school climate. I have been impressed at both the patience and the persistence displayed. Staff make it clear that they believe in student abilities to meet the expectations, but show the care to figure out how to consistently follow through in a way that also allows patience and understanding in how long the growth trajectory is for some students. My experience here makes me reflect not only on my past leadership, but also my life as a parent and how I can better embody patient persistence in all aspects of life.
This is my final message as Interim Principal at Harding. It has been a pleasure to meet and work with all of your children, work with the Harding staff, and meet many parents as well. I wish Harding and all of you the best in the future.

What a beautiful event we experienced with Vanessa Hua and Shanthi Sekaran. It was inspiring to listen to them engage with an auditorium packed with students and families, sharing their thoughts on creative thinking and what it means to listen to and follow your dreams.
It wasn’t long ago that Contra Costa County had some of California’s lowest per capita arts spending, and as a community, we still feel the reverberations of that. But moments like this—when artists come together, and children are able to envision futures for themselves as artists—are something to celebrate.
I’ll be in touch soon about spring programming. Meanwhile, thanks for being part of the fall soft launch of this lovely adventure with kids and words.

Ongoing Needs
Harding is lucky to have an active parent community – everyone’s help is welcome and appreciated! Here are ways you can volunteer:
- RECESS/LUNCH: Parent/Guardian volunteers play a crucial role in supporting kids and staff at recess. It’s also a super fun way to be engaged with your child’s school experience! The PTA is asking families who are able to be present during the lunch hour this year to sign up for at least 4 slots – please sign up here. [*Reminder: you must first have a volunteer badge from the district. Email volunteering@hardingpta.org with questions.]
- IN THE GARDEN: Drop in (on the yard) to help the garden coordinators with kids in the garden. To help with Garden projects, email the garden coordinators.
- IN THE CLASSROOM: Assist individual students or small groups with reading, math, or science activities – contact your student’s teacher
- FUNDRAISING: Assist with flamingo flocking, the Spring auction, the walk/roll-a-thon or read-a-thon etc.! (email the fundraising chair)
- OTHER SKILLS: Whatever else you have to offer!
Contact the Volunteer Coordinator with questions or to work on your own volunteer ideas!
Community Bulletin Board
For soon-to-be-Korematsu families: The Korematsu Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is having their elections for PTSA president, executive vice president, vice president of fundraising, secretary, and treasurer in March 2025. These positions will take over for school year 2025-2026.
Current incumbents will move up to El Cerrito High School.
Korematsu PTSA is less of a time commitment than what is typical at the elementary school level. During the school year, it takes about one hour a week for the busiest position.
The PTSA supports Principal Matt Burnham, the music committee (they use the PTSA charitable tax ID), sex education, eight grade promotion, staff appreciation luncheons, classroom supplies, dances, sports, and many other programs.
This is a great way to stay involved at critical phase of your students’ adolescence. Classroom parent volunteers are no longer needed so this is an important way to stay involved and informed. PTSA board members are the best informed members of the Korematsu community and have influence in a myriad of areas at the school.

Mensaje del director interino Yamashiro
Familias de Harding, me gustaría dejarles con reflexiones sobre una fortaleza aquí en la Escuela Harding que describiré como persistencia paciente. 我想與大家分享一個關於哈丁學校的強項反思，我將其稱為「耐心的堅持」。在學校中，當提到他們的方式是「耐心」時，通常意味著期望和責任感較低；而當提到「堅持」時，往往代表著要求過於苛刻。然而，在哈丁，教職員工努力尋求平衡，尤其是在營造學校氛圍方面。他們展現出的耐心與堅持讓我印象深刻。
教職員工清楚地表明，他們相信學生有能力達到期望，同時也展現出足夠的關愛，去探索如何以持續跟進的方式支持學生，並在需要時給予足夠的耐心與理解，因為有些學生的成長軌跡較為緩慢。我在這裡的經歷，不僅讓我反思自己過去的領導方式，也讓我作為一名家長的生活有所感悟，更加了解如何在生活的各個方面更好地體現「耐心的堅持」。

臨時校長 ヤマシロからのメッセージ
ハーディングの皆さん、
ハーディング校の強みの一つとして、「忍耐強い粘り強さ」という特質をお伝えして、このメッセージを締めくくりたいと思います。多くの学校で「忍耐強い」と表現する場合、それは期待や責任が低いという意味で使われることがあります。また、「粘り強い」と表現する場合、それが要求が厳しく、押しつけがましいことを意味することもあります。しかし、ここハーディングでは、特に学校の雰囲気づくりにおいて、そのバランスを見つけるためにスタッフが一生懸命取り組んできたことに感銘を受けました。
スタッフは、生徒が期待に応える能力を信じていることを明確に示す一方で、成長の軌跡が長くなる生徒にも忍耐と理解をもって一貫して取り組む方法を模索しています。このような姿勢は、私自身の過去のリーダーシップを振り返るだけでなく、親としての人生においても「忍耐強い粘り強さ」をより良く体現できるようにするための刺激となりました。
これが、私がハーディング校の臨時校長としてお届けする最後のメッセージとなります。皆さんのお子さんたちに出会い、ハーディングのスタッフとともに働き、多くの保護者の皆さんと出会うことができて、本当に光栄でした。ハーディング校と皆さんの未来が素晴らしいものとなることを心よりお祈りしています。

なんて素晴らしいイベントだったのでしょう！ヴァネッサ・フアさんとシャンティ・セカランさんをお迎えし、学生や家族で埋め尽くされた講堂で彼らのクリエイティブな思考や夢を追いかけることの意味について聞くことができ、本当に感動的でした。✨
かつてコントラコスタ郡はカリフォルニア州で一人当たりの芸術支出が最も低い地域の一つでしたが、その影響は今でも私たちのコミュニティに響いています。しかし、このような瞬間、アーティストが集まり、子どもたちがアーティストとしての未来を描くことができる機会は、本当にお祝いすべきものです。🎨🎶
春のプログラムについては、また改めてお知らせしますが、この秋、子どもたちと言葉を通じた素敵な冒険の「ソフトローンチ」にご参加いただき、心から感謝しています。

継続的なニーズ
ハーディングは活発な保護者コミュニティを持っています – 皆様のご協力を歓迎し、感謝しています！以下の方法でボランティアとしてお手伝いできます：
- レセス/ランチ: 保護者/ガーディアンのボランティアは、レセス中に子どもやスタッフをサポートする重要な役割を果たします。お子さんの学校経験に関わる楽しい方法でもあります！PTAは、今年度のランチタイムに出席できるご家庭に、最低4回のスロットにサインアップするようお願いしています。 こちらからサインアップしてください。[*注意: 学区からのボランティアバッジが必要です。現在、このプロセスは更新中です。質問がある場合は、volunteering@hardingpta.orgまでご連絡ください。]
- ガーデン: ガーデンコーディネーターと一緒に子どもたちをサポートするために、ガーデンでお手伝いをしてください。ガーデンプロジェクトのサポートについては、ガーデンコーディネーターまでご連絡ください。
- 教室内: 個別の生徒や小グループに対して、読み書き、数学、または科学の活動をサポートします。お子さんの教師にご連絡ください。
- 資金調達: フラミンゴフロッキング、春のオークション、ウォーク/ロール・ア・ソン、リード・ア・ソンなどのサポートをします！（資金調達チェアまでメールでご連絡ください）
- その他のスキル: その他、お持ちのスキルがあればご提供ください！

近い将来コレマツに進学されるご家族へ
コレマツ中学校のPTSA（親・教師・生徒協会）は、2025年3月に次の役職の選挙を行います：
- PTSA会長
- 副会長
- 資金調達担当副会長
- 書記
- 会計
これらの役職は2025-2026年度の学期から引き継がれます。現在の役職者はエルセリート高校に進学する予定です。
PTSAに参加するメリット
コレマツ中学校のPTSAは、小学校での役員活動と比べて時間的な負担が少なく、最も忙しい役職でも週に1時間程度の活動が必要なだけです。PTSAは以下のようなプログラムをサポートしています：
- バーナム校長の取り組み
- 音楽委員会（PTSAの慈善団体としての税金控除IDを使用）
- 性教育プログラム
- 8年生の卒業式
- 教職員感謝ランチ会
- 教室備品
- 学校ダンスやスポーツ
- その他多くのプログラム
PTSAへの参加は、思春期の重要な段階にあるお子さんの学校生活に関与し続ける素晴らしい方法です。中学校では教室での親ボランティアは必要なくなるため、学校での情報を得たり、関与したりするのに最適な方法です。また、PTSAの役員はコレマツのコミュニティで最も情報に通じたメンバーであり、学校の様々な分野で影響力を持っています。
