A big thank you to parents and families for your support for student attendance. Our overall student attendance rate this year is close to 97%! School attendance has been closely linked to long term student achievement and is also important to both the overall school community and individual connections and relationships at school. In addition, funding in the state of California is based on average daily attendance (in other words when students are not at school WCCUSD does not receive funding for them). We appreciate all that you do to help your children arrive at Harding every day.

The Harding Carnival: October 20th, 11am-4pm
Volunteers Needed
The Carnival is 2 weeks away on Oct 20th, and the Carnival Committee has many wonderful booths planned for your enjoyment … and we need lots of help to staff them!
Parents, grandparents, older Harding kids, alumni & high schoolers (we’ll sign community service forms), anyone who wants to help – no WCCUSD badges needed. If you haven’t volunteered with Harding before, this is a great opportunity to get involved and meet other fun families. 2-3 hour shifts: set up (8-11am), game/food/entertainment booths (Launch water rockets! Take food orders! Make cotton candy! Help kids test their skills at Buzzwire! Sell raffle tickets! And more!), or clean up (4-6:30pm).

Can we borrow your folding tables/canopies?
We’re looking for tables (~6’) and canopy tents (10×10-ish) to use at the Carnival. Drop off Sunday morning 7-9:30am and pickup Sunday afternoon 4-5:30pm. Or we can get them from you at Harding earlier in the week. Email harding.carnival@hardingpta.org or enter it on the “Supplies Needed” tab on the sheet linked above.

Shanthi Sekaran and Vanessa Hua are coming to read at Harding Auditorium! Students and families will get the chance to engage with local professional writers, and Pegasus will provide books for purchase. This is the first literary event in a series of exciting opportunities to come… See ‘Exciting News’ below.
November 14th is Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day
Harding will have a small walk showcasing student art and projects relating to her and the legacy of segregation. We are also hoping to have a movie night soon, stay tuned for details!”
Exciting News…
We are thrilled to announce a new literacy opportunity for our public-school community, led by none other than Harding parent, and El Cerrito’s Poet Laureate, Tess Taylor. Tess, an acclaimed poet and recipient of a prestigious Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellowship to bring poetry and creative writing directly to our students. Tess’s project of bringing extra literary programming to El Cerrito was chosen among many and she joins twenty four other poets laureate nationwide doing projects that uplift poetry in their communities. Tess wants to focus her grant on the schools! This grant will enable a series of engaging programs including author visits, after-school workshops through HASEP, and a chance for students to participate in an El Cerrito Youth Poetry Festival in the spring.
Tess’s first event kicks off in November 7, when Tess invites noted youth author Shanthi Sekaran— author of The Samosa Rebellion— to Harding to do writing and read with the fourth-grade classes. But it’s not just your kids who get an author visit! We hope you’ll come back as a family. On November 13, from 5.30-6.30 at the Harding Auditorium, Tess hosts BAY AREA VOICES, a family friendly literary event where Vanessa Hua and Shanthi Sekaran, will read stories aimed at young readers and talk about writing for youth and kids. The entire community is invited. Please save the date and come.
Finally, if your kid loves to write, keep an eye out for Tess’s spring HASEP: Poetry is Your Superpower, which will be offered on a sliding scale: no one turned away for lack of funds. Over the spring semester, teachers who wish it can request guest teaching artists in the classroom. Finally, in the spring there will be a Youth Poetry Festival, with fun activities, books, and a chance to hear our kids read their work. This partnership between our schools and the wider El Cerrito literary community promises to be an inspiring experience for all involved. Stay tuned for more details on how your child can participate!
Volunteer Opportunities
Ongoing Needs
Harding is lucky to have an active parent community – everyone’s help is welcome and appreciated! Here are ways you can volunteer:
- RECESS/LUNCH: Parent/Guardian volunteers play a crucial role in supporting kids and staff at recess. It’s also a super fun way to be engaged with your child’s school experience! The PTA is asking families who are able to be present during the lunch hour this year to sign up for at least 4 slots – please sign up here. [*Reminder: you must first have a volunteer badge from the district. Email volunteering@hardingpta.org with questions.]
- IN THE GARDEN: Drop in (on the yard) to help the garden coordinators with kids in the garden. To help with Garden projects, email the garden coordinators.
- IN THE CLASSROOM: Assist individual students or small groups with reading, math, or science activities – contact your student’s teacher
- FUNDRAISING: Assist with flamingo flocking, the Spring auction, the walk/roll-a-thon or read-a-thon etc.! (email the fundraising chair)
- OTHER SKILLS: Whatever else you have to offer!

From a former Harding parent and PTA member whose student is now at Korematsu Middle School (KMS): “I’m the co-chair of the Korematsu Music Parent Association (KMPA) and have been asked by Ms. Carrico (our music program director) to reach out to the Harding PTA and spread the word that she will be offering to teach elementary band to 5th and 6th graders this year. The classes would be held in the KMS band room on Wednesday afternoons (5th grade 5:30-6:15, 6th grade 6:30-7:15). See the introduction to this signup form for additional information.”

臨時校長 ヤマシロからのメッセージ
Hardingコミュニティの皆さん、
保護者の皆様、そしてご家族の皆様、学生の出席にご協力いただき誠にありがとうございます。今年の全体的な学生出席率は97％に近づいています！学校への出席は、長期的な学生の成績に密接に関連しており、学校全体のコミュニティや個々のつながりにも重要です。また、カリフォルニア州の資金は日々の出席率に基づいており（つまり、学生が学校に来ていないとWCCUSDはその分の資金を受け取れません）、お子様が毎日Hardingに登校できるようご尽力いただき、心より感謝申し上げます。

ボランティア募集中
カーニバルは10月20日、あと2週間です！カーニバル委員会は皆さんに楽しんでいただける素晴らしいブースをたくさん計画していますが、その運営にご協力いただける方をたくさん必要としています。
保護者、祖父母、Hardingの年長児、卒業生、高校生（コミュニティサービスの書類にサインします）など、手伝ってくださる方ならどなたでも大歓迎です。WCCUSDのバッジは不要です。まだHardingでボランティアをしたことがない方は、これは関わる良い機会であり、他の楽しい家族と交流する絶好のチャンスです。2〜3時間のシフト：セットアップ（8-11am）、ゲーム/フード/エンターテイメントのブース（水ロケットを発射！食事の注文を取る！綿あめを作る！子どもたちがBuzzwireで技を試すのを手伝う！ラッフルチケットを売る！など）、または片付け（4-6:30pm）。

文学イベント：著者朗読会
シャンティ・セカラン氏とヴァネッサ・ホア氏が、ハーディング小学校の講堂で朗読を行います！学生や家族は地元のプロ作家と交流する機会を得ることができ、Pegasusによる書籍販売も行われます。このイベントは、今後開催されるエキサイティングな文学イベントの第1弾です…詳細は順次お知らせします！
11月14日はルビー・ブリッジズの登校日です
ハーディングでは、生徒のアート作品や彼女と人種隔離の遺産に関するプロジェクトを展示する小さなウォークイベントを開催します。また、近日中に映画鑑賞会を予定していますので、お楽しみに！
エキサイティングなニュース…
私たちは、ハーディングの保護者であり、エルセリートのポエット・ローリエートであるテス・テイラーさんが率いる、新しいリテラシーの機会を公立学校コミュニティに提供できることを嬉しく思います。テスさんは著名な詩人であり、アメリカ詩人アカデミーのポエット・ローリエート・フェローシップを受賞し、詩と創作活動を直接学生に届けるプロジェクトを開始します。テスさんのプロジェクトは、エルセリートに特別な文学プログラムをもたらすものであり、全国の他の24人のポエット・ローリエートと共に、詩を通じてコミュニティを盛り上げる活動に取り組んでいます。テスさんは、この助成金を学校に焦点を当てて活用することを望んでいます！
この助成金により、作家の訪問や放課後ワークショップ（HASEPを通じて）を含む、一連の魅力的なプログラムが実現し、春にはエルセリートユースポエトリーフェスティバルに学生たちが参加できる機会も提供されます。
テスさんの最初のイベントは、11月7日に始まり、彼女は注目の若手作家であるシャンティ・セカランさん（『The Samosa Rebellion』の著者）をハーディングに招き、4年生のクラスで執筆と朗読を行います。しかし、それだけではありません！11月13日、午後5時半から6時半にハーディングの講堂で開催される「BAY AREA VOICES」では、ファミリー向けの文学イベントとして、ヴァネッサ・ホアさんとシャンティ・セカランさんが若い読者に向けた物語を朗読し、子供や若者向けの執筆について話します。コミュニティ全体が招待されていますので、ぜひ日程を空けてご家族でご参加ください。
さらに、お子さんが書くことが好きなら、春の「HASEP: 詩はあなたのスーパーパワー」というプログラムにも注目してください。このプログラムはスライディングスケールで提供され、資金不足で参加を断ることはありません。また、春学期中には、希望する教師は教室でゲストのアーティストを招くことができます。最終的には、ユースポエトリーフェスティバルが開催され、楽しいアクティビティや本、そして子どもたちが自分の作品を朗読する機会が設けられます。このプロジェクトは、学校とエルセリートの文学コミュニティとのパートナーシップであり、関わるすべての人にとって刺激的な体験となるでしょう。お子さんがどのように参加できるか、詳細をお待ちください！

継続的なニーズ
ハーディングは活発な保護者コミュニティを持っています – 皆様のご協力を歓迎し、感謝しています！以下の方法でボランティアとしてお手伝いできます：
- レセス/ランチ: 保護者/ガーディアンのボランティアは、レセス中に子どもやスタッフをサポートする重要な役割を果たします。お子さんの学校経験に関わる楽しい方法でもあります！PTAは、今年度のランチタイムに出席できるご家庭に、最低4回のスロットにサインアップするようお願いしています。 こちらからサインアップしてください。[*注意: 学区からのボランティアバッジが必要です。現在、このプロセスは更新中です。質問がある場合は、volunteering@hardingpta.orgまでご連絡ください。]
- ガーデン: ガーデンコーディネーターと一緒に子どもたちをサポートするために、ガーデンでお手伝いをしてください。ガーデンプロジェクトのサポートについては、ガーデンコーディネーターまでご連絡ください。
- 教室内: 個別の生徒や小グループに対して、読み書き、数学、または科学の活動をサポートします。お子さんの教師にご連絡ください。
- 資金調達: フラミンゴフロッキング、春のオークション、ウォーク/ロール・ア・ソン、リード・ア・ソンなどのサポートをします！（資金調達チェアまでメールでご連絡ください）
- その他のスキル: その他、お持ちのスキルがあればご提供ください！

「私はKorematsu音楽保護者協会（KMPA）の共同議長を務めています。今年、カリコ先生（私たちの音楽プログラムディレクター）が、5年生と6年生向けに小学校バンドの指導を行うことをお知らせします。授業はKMSのバンドルームで、水曜日の午後に開催されます（5年生：午後5時30分～6時15分、6年生：午後6時30分～7時15分）。詳細はこの申込フォームをご覧ください。」

PTAは毎月の第1火曜日に会議を開催しますが、変更がある場合はお知らせします。
コミュニティからの意見や関与は、PTAの活動や資金提供するプログラムにとって重要です。会議に参加し、PTAのSlack、週刊Enewsニュースレター、Hardingpta.orgに接続することで、情報を把握し、あなたの声が届くようにしましょう！
