Hello Harding Community,
Many thanks to everyone for a relatively successful first week back in school. While there were almost thirty reported positive cases in the community, the systems in place are working and all but the five already announced remained quarantined at home. The five asymptomatic cases were quickly removed from school, followed up with PCR tests and one has reported a negative already. Other parts of the health and safety systems, masking (well fitted and KN95 is recommended now), cleaning, and maintaining class cohorts, are working together to make the staff feel like this COVID spike might be manageable for us. Working together is the key here and I thank families for testing and evaluating your child’s health before bringing them to school, communicating with the office, and following health protocols as directed. I thank the staff and especially teachers for taking on extra responsibilities with flexibility, focus on students, and in support of each other.
What is next?
- Remain vigilant. Test regularly, check your child for symptoms daily. Report all exposures and positive results to the office. Call 510 231-1413 or email nancy.razo@wccusd.net.
- Read ALL communications. The district has been sharing much of the most immediate information before I get it and can do anything with it. Please continue to rely on these emails and calls. At this time, the most important information that went out at the end of last week was about getting your child tested before returning to school on Tuesday. On Tuesday, January 4, the district opened up three additional testing centers for all WCCUSD students and staff: at the Alvarado Adult School in Richmond; the Ohlone Elementary School campus in Hercules; and the district central office in Richmond. The testing sites will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These sites are intended for students and staff who have had a positive COVID-19 test at home. If a student or staff member has a positive test with an at-home test (which are antigen tests), we ask that you go to confirm if it’s a positive test by taking a PCR test at one of these three new locations. The new testing centers will also provide antigen tests. Please do not bring anyone to school who may have been exposed to the virus, instead we ask that you bring them to one of the new testing locations. - Stay Flexible. Because of Assembly Bill 130, districts are working to avoid going back to distance learning. Navigating this winter will be challenging so let’s continue to work together and shift as needed when needed. Remember, individual health is a community effort.
- This week’s testing day at Harding has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 12.

Muchas gracias a todos por una primera semana de regreso a la escuela relativamente exitosa. Si bien hubo casi treinta casos positivos informados en la comunidad, los sistemas establecidos están funcionando y todos, excepto los cinco ya anunciados, permanecieron en cuarentena en sus hogares. Los cinco casos asintomáticos fueron retirados rápidamente de la escuela, seguidos con pruebas de PCR y uno ya ha reportado negativo. Otras partes de los sistemas de salud y seguridad, el uso de máscaras (bien ajustadas y ahora se recomienda KN95), la limpieza y el mantenimiento de las cohortes de clase, están trabajando juntas para que el personal sienta que este pico de COVID podría ser manejable para nosotros. El martes 4 de enero, el distrito abrió tres centros de evaluación adicionales para todos los estudiantes y el personal de WCCUSD: en la Escuela para Adultos Alvarado en Richmond; el campus de la Escuela Primaria Ohlone en Hercules; y la oficina central del distrito en Richmond.
